Is my money protected on UOWN?
Your money is as safe as we can make it, but it's important to understand the protections and risks:
During investment: When you invest in a property project, your money goes into a stand-alone company (an SPV) set up for that specific project. Those funds are ring-fenced from UOWN's own operations. In the unlikely event that UOWN (the company) ran into trouble, your investments would not get dragged down with us. Another organisation or administrator could step in to manage the SPV and your investment would still exist independently. So, your stake in the property project is protected even if UOWN goes bust (not that we have any plans for that – we're doing great!).
Direct investment model: You invest directly from your bank account via Yapily's open banking technology. Your funds go straight into the project SPV's bank account, where they're held until drawn down for use in the development. You maintain full control of your funds until the moment you invest.
Not FSCS-covered: Important to note – investments through UOWN are not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). The FSCS in the UK typically covers bank savings up to £85,000, but it does not cover investments. So if a project were to lose money, you can't claim compensation from FSCS. This is standard for investment platforms.
Platform security: On the tech side, we use robust security measures (see the Security section for details) to protect your account and data.
In summary, your ownership in each property is secure and separate from UOWN as a company. Your funds go directly into the SPV's bank account when you invest and are held there until drawn down for the development. But because this is an investment, there's no government guarantee - your capital is at risk, and returns are not guaranteed. We want to be transparent: you can lose money, so only invest what you can afford to lose. That said, we do everything we can to maximise success and protect your interests.
